Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

This ground beef Philly cheesesteak sandwich is a little spin off of the traditional Philly Cheesesteak. It’s perfect especially if you can’t find chipped beef.

I love a good cheesesteak, and in this area you can definitely find a good one. Making it at home can be a bit more challenging as finding the chipped steak isn’t always easy. I love to have ground beef on hand at all times so I can make this Simple Skillet Baked Pasta. So, I decided to substitute in the ground beef for the meat and created this cheesesteak sandwich using all may favorite toppings and it’s delicious.

Ingredients

Ground Beef –  Use 80-85% ground beef, it has more flavor and you will drain the fat.

Onion – One small yellow onion

Olive Oil – Used to fry the onions

Salt – Regular table or sea salt

American Cheese – Sliced American cheese, however you can use cheddar or Cheese Wiz

Crusty Roll – Use a crusty sub or Italian roll

Ketchup – It adds a nice sweetness and tangy flavor to the sandwich.

Pickles – Use dill pickles

Peppers – You can use roasted peppers or sweet peppers.

Instructions

  1. Split the sandwich roll and toast it in a large dry skillet. Once the roll is toasted, remove it from the skillet and set it aside.
  2. Using the same skillet, fry the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the fat and remove the ground beef from the skillet placing it in a medium size bowl.
  3. Add 1-2 tbsp of olive oil to the skillet and fry the onions until they are soft and tender.
  4. Add the cooked ground beef back into the skillet with the onions and mix to combine.
  5. Top the ground beef and onions with the sliced American Cheese. Place a lid on the skillet to help melt the cheese.
  6. Once the cheese is melted lace the ground beef, onions and cheese onto the toasted roll.
  7. Top the roll with your favorite toppings.

Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

Materials

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Yellow Onion, small Thinly sliced
  • 1 pinch Sea Salt Use fine sea salt
  • 5 slices American Cheese
  • 2 Hoagie/Sub Roll Use gluten-free if needed
  • 4 tbsp Ketchup Optional
  • 8 slices Dill Pickles Optional
  • 8 Slices Roasted Red Peppers Optional

Instructions

  • Split the hoagie roll in half to make a sandwich then lightly toast it face down it in a large dry skillet. Remove and set aside.
  • Using the same skillet you used to toast the roll, fry the ground beef until it's no longer pink. Drain the fat and place the ground beef in a medium size bowl.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of olive to the skillet and fry the onions until they are soft, tender, and slightly charred. Add a pinch of salt to the onions are they are cooking.
  • Once the onions are cooked add the ground beef back into the skillet and stir to combine.
  • Top the ground beef/onion mixture with slices of the American cheese. Cover the skillet and let it melt.
  • Place the ground beef with the melted cheese onto the roll.
  • Top with your favorite toppings.

Notes

Use a gluten-free roll if needed. If you can find the new Greenlite Rolls they work really well for this sandwich.
